9/17/2004 Virginia Tech Partnership Brings Project-Management Training
Virginia Tech partnership brings project-management training Companies that wants to train employees to conceive, implement, manage and complete projects can enroll them in a nine-week seminar at the M-TEC. On nine Saturdays from Oct. 9 through Dec. 11, eight-hour sessions will be conducted in conjunction with Virginia Tech's Project Management Institute and its certification program. Each session will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fee for the 72-hours of instructions and training in core competencies is $2,495. The certificate-granting program provides a relevant, critical-thinking foundation in the concept, disciplines and best practices for professionally managing a project, be it in pharmaceuticals, in the manufacturing arena, construction, research and development, or information technology. Complete with explanations, examples and references, the institute's program follows the path of a project through its initiation, planning, execution, control and closing, covering as many as 38 steps and procedures along the way. “It provides the skills to take a project to a successful and profitable completion,” says Cindy Buckley, training coordinator at the KVCC M-TEC. “Enrollees can pass a project-management certification exam because they know the material and all of the processes, and not because they took a course to help them pass an exam. “Businesses have made it clear that project-management training is increasingly important to their workforce,” Buckley said. “Our research led us to this partnership with Virginia Tech based on its track record for success and reputation for excellence.” “The Virginia Tech program is one of the best in the country in teaching somebody the skills for running a project smoothly,” said James DeHaven, the M-TEC's executive director. “It guarantees results. More than 90 percent of participants pass the certification examination on the first try. “This new partnership is consisted with the M-TEC model of fulfilling training needs with high-quality training solutions,” DeHaven said. Among the topics to be covered over the nine Saturdays will be the whys and wherefores of project management, how to plan and launch an endeavor, the procurement of essentials, time and cost estimates, scheduling steps and procedures, the budgeting-and-staffing process, risk analysis, team development, project execution and control, “watching your flanks,” ethics and professional responsibility, coping with change and control, and closure. The Virginia Tech connection is the second for the M-TEC with a four-year university. The University of Notre Dame has linked arms with KVCC's M-TEC to allow local entrepreneurs to earn a certificate in executive management. The second semester of that offering is running through Nov. 15.
