| |   | Overviews in workers compensation at M-TEC
A short course in workers compensation, how its costs to businesses can be controlled in a fair way without penalizing employees, and strategies for meeting statutory regulations will be covered in three seminars at the KVCC Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC).
The dates for each complete session are June 15, Aug. 17, and Oct. 5 in the M-TEC, located in The Groves, KVCC’s business-education-technology park located along I-94 off of 9th Street.
The fee for "Workers Compensation -- A Practitioner’s Guide" is $195. Each seminar will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The instructor for all three overviews will be David J. Gregory of Strategic Aligned Solutions that is based in Tekonsha. He has also taught a variety of core-subject courses at Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business.
Among the topics will be the statutory regulations spelled out in the Workers Disability Compensation Act, its applications to the workplace, types of insurance programs, the coverage of illnesses and injuries, the range of benefits, reporting procedures, claims handling, return-to-work practices, court proceedings and settlements, case management, and ethics considerations.
Each seminar’s objective will be for participants to develop and administer an effective workers-compensation program that fosters positive employee relations while providing an emphasis on cost containment.
Earlier this spring, the KVCC M-TEC hosted a presentation by an analyst for the Michigan Economic Development Corp. on how manufacturers and related enterprises can fairly reduce their workers-compensation costs. She detailed how Aztec Manufacturing, which produces supplies in Romulus for the automotive industry with United Auto Workers employees, was able to reduce its annual costs for workers compensation from $300,000 to $60,000 via a collaborative approach.
The June 15, Aug. 17 and Oct. 5 seminars are designed for human-resources professionals and those who administer workers-compensation programs for enterprises.
