Top-caliber training for executives, managers
Notre Dame, M-TEC forge partnership for executive training
Notre Dame’s prestigious program in executive-management training is coming to the KVCC M-TEC on the heels of the facility hosting a highly successful "Boot Camp" for budding and rookie entrepreneurs.
The 20-week, two-semester program begins March 8 and will mark only the fourth distance-learning site offered by the University of Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business for earning a certificate in executive management.
Through live, interactive, two-way sessions with experienced Notre Dame business faculty, participants will gain insights into such core areas as executive leadership, management, corporate ethics, strategy, economics, marketing, accounting, finance, and the parameters of international business.
"This program is targeted for owners, partners, key managers, boards of directors, and executives of companies — from major corporations to smaller organizations to family enterprises — who want to see their businesses grow and be more profitable," said James DeHaven, executive director of the KVCC Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC).
"It is a perfect next step for what we tried to accomplish at our first-ever ‘Boot Camp’ for people who want to launch new enterprises or improve existing ones," DeHaven said. "And this time, we will be helping seasoned executives in their training and professional-development needs."
Notre Dame describes the certificate-granting, executive-management program as a resource "to provide the latest business information to meet the fast-paced challenges of today’s competitive global environment." Each topic is couched in real-world experience and specific examples so that what is learned in the evening can be applied on the job the next morning.
The spring semester will run from March 8 through May 10. Each three-hour session on consecutive Mondays will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The topics will be: introduction to financial statements; personality types and team building; the relationships among cost, volume and profit; budgeting; activity-based costing and federal taxes; macro-economics; human-resources management; managing for results; ethics; and leadership.
The fall-semester series, also to be held at the KVCC M-TEC in The Groves off 9th Street near the college’s Texas Township Campus, will begin Sept. 13 and conclude Nov. 15.
That segment’s topics will include problem solving and decision making, marketing, two sessions on negotiations, financial analysis, global business, financial planning, capital budgeting, and a concluding pair of sessions on strategic planning.
The fee for the 20 weeks of instructions, materials, books and refreshments is $5,195. Enrollment is limited and the deadline to apply for the KVCC M-TEC offering is March 3. Registration information is available by calling (269) 353-1253.
Notre Dame’s three other distance-learning sites for this program are based in Toledo, Cincinnati and Indianapolis.
"While all of the sessions will be live," DeHaven said, "each will be preserved and archived. This will allow participants to review any portion of a presentation, all of which will be indexed and easily accessed. The Notre Dame representatives were highly impressed with our distance-learning capabilities. That played a major part in the university partnering with the M-TEC."
The KVCC M-TEC wrapped up its inaugural, four-Fridays "Boot Camp" on Feb. 6 as eight teams of would-be entrepreneurs interacted with a score of chief executive officers and corporate leaders who acted as both presenters and mentors in helping them mold successful business strategies.
The finale in the four-week competition featured the fashioning of an executive summary and the crafting of a 10-minute, graphics-enhanced presentation that were subject to assessment by two panels of judges.
Winning the first prize of $5,000 was Reality Check, a Grand Rapids-based telecommunications audit/resource outsource company managed by Lorie Nutting and Scott Greenlee.
T.F. Solutions earned the second-place money of $2,500 in describing its concept for a company providing information-technology support and services for local businesses. Its owner is Budd Wright and has been based on Grandville, Mich.
Third place went to Kteq Information Technology Solutions LLC, which has been located in Paw Paw and is owned by Mark Poffenberger and Bob Milbeck. It provides information-technology services to small businesses. A new Gateway laptop was its reward.
DeHaven reports the committee that organized "Boot Camp I" will reconvene in the next few weeks to review the first session, the evaluations of its strengths and weaknesses, and select a time frame for the second one.
Joining KVCC, the M-TEC and Fifth Third Bank in sponsoring the "Boot Camp" were TGap Ventures, the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center, Southwest Michigan First, and BlueGranite Inc.
