With Three New Tridem Drives
KALAMAZOO, Mich., August 13, 2005 - Dana Corporation’s Commercial Vehicle Systems group has introduced three new Dana® Spicer® tridem drive axles to strengthen its growing lineup of heavy-duty components for vocational applications. The new tridem family is designed to significantly reduce life cycle costs and improve reliability while giving customers a complete range of application-specific axle options.
The new Dana Spicer tridem axle line includes:
• The T69-170HP Series, rated up to 200,000 pounds GCWR, is ideally suited for various vocational applications including construction, heavy haul, and logging.
• The T78-190P Series, rated up to 240,000 pounds GCWR, is designed to tackle tough oil field and mining applications that often require superior traction and a high gross weight capacity.
• The T78-590P Series, rated up to 240,000 pounds GCWR, is suited for those vocational applications requiring high gross weight capacities in combination with high numerical ratio availability.
The three models, all of which carry a 3-year/350,000-mile warranty for most vocational applications, are now available for production orders on all makes and models of trucks and tractors manufactured in North America.
“The new axles include several of Dana’s patented drive axle features to meet the current and future needs of our vocational customers,” said Leo Wenstrup, senior product manager for drive axle systems for Dana.
These patented features include:
• A threaded input adjuster that precisely sets end play in the power divider for closer adjustment without the use of shims, eliminating a potential leak path and improving reliability;
• A hypoid gearing design that improves interaxle driveline angles to minimize driveline vibration;
• An on-demand lube pump that reduces temperatures as much as 20 percent, extending lubricant life and reducing internal friction and wear; and
• Threaded differential bearings with integrated adjusters that maximize life by providing continuous adjustments and allowing precise settings of gears and bearings.
Additional standard features, common among all new Dana Spicer drive axles, include:
• A broad range of available ratios to meet a variety of vocational applications;
• Extra wide face-width gearing that provides greater strength for added durability;
• A wheel differential lock available in all axle positions for maximum traction in slippery conditions. For the T78-190P and T78-590P models, the wheel differential lock feature can be added even after the vehicle is built or in use;
• A high capacity bearing and gearing system to more reliably handle the toughest applications;
• An integrated ring gear and wheel differential mounting system that further improves reliability by eliminating bolted joints;
• Large wheel differential gearing for higher power density and added strength;
• An integral pinion cage and carrier, eliminating a potential leak path and also contributing to system strength;
• Sixteen large, fine-pitch M20 bolt ring gear fasteners that prevent loosening and improve reliability; and
• Heavy wall housings for additional durability and reliability.
“Our OEM customers will welcome the fact that the new axles significantly minimize fit-up issues,” added Wenstrup, “while also enabling them to offer broader application ratings than those available with competitive models.”
